Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State has told people who want to succeed him to pray and seek God's guidance.

He said only a God-fearing person will take over, and that no one can block someone God has chosen.

He spoke on Monday at the Ecumenical Centre in Igbogene, Yenagoa, during the state's 15th thanksgiving service.

He said Bayelsa has been handed over to God, who has the final say on its affairs.

Diri urged residents to stay united, tolerant and peaceful, saying that is the only way the state can develop.

He said his administration will keep working to improve people's lives and that the state has one of the best environments in Nigeria for growth.

Daily Trust reports that the Bayelsa governorship election will take place a few months after the 2027 general election.

The guest preacher, Very Rev. Joseph Opelema, a former CAN chairman in the state, spoke on Christians being good citizens of both the church and society.

He based his message on Jesus' words about giving to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.

He said Christians in public office should be guided by sacrifice, justice, accountability and love.
