It has been revealed why major world powers like US and UK are giving President Buhari massive support. The reason for this was stated yesterday by the Former American Ambassador to Nigeria, Amb. Walter Carrington while delivering a lecture titled 'Nigeria and the future of the Black World' at the First Eminent Lectures Series of the University of Benin, UNIBEN.
He said the reason why major world powers are backing the Buhari administration is because they are confident that President Buhari was an honest leader and "tough enough to turn this country around". He said that US and UK have trust in Buhari to kick against all the abnormalities which has impeded the growth and development of Nigeria as a country.
Carrington said that President Buhari's stand and effort against corruption and misappropriation of public funds is also another reason why the world powers have backed his government. He believes the President will fight against all those who misuse public funds thereby impoverishing the poor masses.
Carrington said: “As a private citizen Buhari lived modestly and since taking on the duties of president, he has set a refreshing example of financial transparency which all public officials should and must emulate. I believe that having been elected democratically as a civilian president, President Buhari will fulfill the third of Abraham Lincoln’s prepositional triad making his a government for the people, a government which cares more for the welfare of the poor majority and disadvantaged than for the unjust enrichment of the privileged few and their enablers who too often in the past have looted the national treasury.”
Carrington bemoaned the way public officials loot tax payers' money for their selfish ends. He could not believe why Nigeria with its rich potentials still lag behind because of institutional decay and dishonesty from the people entrusted with the power to rule. He believes Nigeria will return to its glory years as the giant of Africa and reiterated his love for the country which led to his decision to marry Dr. Arese, an indigene of Edo State.
