Group Kicks As Nigerian Doctor Allegedly Slaps Nurse In Abuja

The spokesperson for the hospital, Dr Tayo Haastrup, disclosed this in a text message sent to one of our correspondents in Abuja on Tuesday.

According to a report by The PUNCH, the management of the National Hospital Abuja has set up a panel to look into an allegation of assault levelled against a medical doctor, Atinko-Sunday Ikeya.

The spokesperson for the hospital, Dr Tayo Haastrup, disclosed this in a text message sent to one of our correspondents in Abuja on Tuesday.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the FCT chapter of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives last Friday demanded justice after Ikeya allegedly slapped a nurse, Ebalu Marvis.

The Chairman of the association, Deborah Yusuf, while briefing journalists in Abuja, alleged that Ikeya, of the same hospital, assaulted Marvis while she was going about her duties at the hospital.

Yusuf alleged that on June 13, Ikeya disregarded the medical and professional code of conduct and “physically and verbally assaulted the nurse working as a colleague with him at the hospital.”

According to the chairman, the accused medical doctor insisted that the nurse must leave a patient she was attending to and dress the wound of another patient in the female medical ward.

She stated that her explanation to the doctor that she was attending to a patient on Naso Gastric tube feeding fell on deaf ears.

“Atinko (Ikeya) went ahead and accosted Marvis, who was at the point of wheeling a medication trolley out of the ward. The next thing that followed can only be imagined for a horrendous scene in a horror film as he slapped her,” Yusuf said.

But Haastrup said the hospital had set up a panel.

“We have set up a panel of investigation on this and we have appealed to both sides to exercise patience until we unravel the truth of what transpired,” he added.

Both Marvis and Ikeya declined comments when contacted by PUNCH Metro, saying the matter was under investigation.

“But the only thing I will tell you is that I wouldn’t do such a thing,” Ikeya added.
