Women from Isiama Afara Ukwu in Abia State, the community of detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu, staged a peaceful protest against his prolonged detention by the Nigerian government.

The women who were armed with Kanu’s portrait, singing a protest song, demanded immediate release of the IPOB leader from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) where he has been held since June 2021 when he was extraordinarily renditioned from Kenya for alleged terrorism and treasonable felony.

SaharaReporters had reported how the South-East Governors Forum agreed to meet with President Bola Tinubu and engage with the Nigerian government to secure Kanu’s release from detention.

Similarly, members of the Labour Party (LP) caucus in the South-East Houses of Assembly have also called for Kanu’s release.

The lawmakers said the release of Kanu would separate genuine agitators from criminals and kidnappers as well as douse insecurity in the South-East.

According to the lawmakers, Kanu's prolonged detention was emboldening criminal elements posing as agitators to engage in unlawful activities in the South-East region.

Also, no fewer than 50 federal lawmakers from diverse political parties and regions in Nigeria have written to President Tinubu, appealing for Kanu’s release from detention.

The lawmakers urged the President to invoke Section 174 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and Section 107(1) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015, to facilitate Kanu's release from detention, and expressed belief that the action would significantly contribute to restoring peace in the South-East.
