Sixteen lives have been lost while 3,936 houses were destroyed in Jigawa state due to flooding.
The Executive Secretary of the Jigawa State Emergency Management agency, Dr Haruna Mariga, who confirmed this in Dutse on Wednesday, August 14, 2024, said the disaster affected 10 local government areas of the state.
According to Mariga, the flood also submerged 2,744 hectares of farmland following torrential rainfall since the commencement of the 2024 rainy season.
He said the deaths were the result of building collapses, drowning, and canoe mishaps.
"The disaster resulted in 16 deaths, with 3,936 people displaced, while 2,744 hectares of farmland were submerged,” he said, adding that the situation might escalate due to the anticipated high volume of rainfall.
Mariga said the agency had provided temporary shelter and distributed relief materials to the displaced people to mitigate their suffering.
He listed the items to include rice, maize, maize grits, blankets, pasta, and mats.
