Jonathan's Administration Never Sold Oil Blocks - Group Declares

A civil society group has slammed rumours that President Goodluck Jonathan sold an oil block for $1.85billion but remitted only a $100 million to government coffers.

A civil and political action group, promoting democracy and good governance in Nigeria, has described as false, the rumour that former President Goodluck Jonathan sold an oil block for $1.85billion but remitted only a $100 million to government coffers.

The group charged the media and the ruling All Progressives Congress  (APC) to desist from spreading misleading reports.

“We have good and evil and unfortunately we live in a country where truth has taken flight and lies are told by political elites without a pinch of shame. Sadly those spreading these lies and making unsubstantiated allegations are not inspiring support for President Muhammadu Buhari,” the group said.

Prior to her scheduled meeting with President Buhari, the Secretary General of EITI, Ms Scot Clare, had alleged that the federal government under President Jonathan sold an oil block for 1.85billion and remitted only $100 million to the Federation Account.

The governing party had since been re-echoing  these allegations without making any effort to verify or substantiate them.

In a statement issued in Lagos and signed by the National Coordinator of the group, Mr. Clem Aguiyi, he dismissed Clare’s statement as “ignorant and mischievous.”

“Who is the buyer of this block and how was this payment made?,” he queried.

Aguiyi flayed a section of the media for aiding falsehood against the former president because they are lazy and compromised making it impossible for them to ask simple questions or conduct critical investigation on issues.
