A couple, Mathew Ugochukwu and his wife Oluwarankami Ugochukwu, have been arrested for stealing a four-month-old baby and two other children in the Mowe area of Ogun State.
According to reports, Oluwarankami visited the mother of the infant at a clinic in Mowe on Saturday, where the mother was receiving treatment.
She deceived the sick mother into handing over the baby under the pretence of caring for the child while she rested, before fleeing with the infant.
Following a report of the incident, detectives from the Mowe Division, led by the Divisional Police Officer CSP Folake Afeniforo, swiftly mobilised and placed motor parks and strategic locations in the area on red alert.
Through sustained surveillance and credible intelligence, the couple were tracked to their hideout in the Kekere Ekun area of Mowe on Monday evening, where the stolen baby was successfully recovered along with two other children found in their possession.
Both suspects were immediately arrested and taken into custody.
Police spokesperson DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi disclosed that one of the other recovered children had previously been declared missing in 2024.
The biological parents of all three children were contacted and confirmed their identities.
The case has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Eleweran for further investigation to uncover the full extent of the operation and prosecute all those involved.
The State Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, commended the officers of the Mowe Division for their swift and professional response, reaffirming the command's commitment to combating child trafficking, abduction and violent crimes across Ogun State.
