Man Jailed Five Years For Impregnating Teen Girl And Abandoning Her

Kabiru Umar was sentenced to five years in prison by an Upper Area Court in Adamawa State's Ganye Local Government Area after he acknowledged that, while initially taking responsibility for the pregnancy, he had abandoned his secondary school partner.

A man has been sentenced to five years in prison after he was accused of impregnating a girl and later abandoning her without financial or medical support.

The matter was brought before the court by the girl's father, Mohammed Njidda, and the girl herself, through their lawyer, Abdulrahman Njidda, who accused the defendant of neglecting her after getting her pregnant.

The court heard that the convict had approached the girl's father seeking her hand in marriage without disclosing that she was already pregnant.

He initially accepted responsibility for the pregnancy but subsequently withdrew his financial and medical support, which led to the legal action against him.

He pleaded guilty to the charge, and the court sentenced him to five years' imprisonment, with an option of a ₦200,000 fine.

Beyond the prison term, the court ordered him to pay ₦73,000 to cover medical bills, feeding and antenatal care, ₦100,000 for nutritional support, and ₦200,000 towards the complainant's legal expenses.

He was also directed to pay a monthly maintenance allowance of ₦20,000 to the victim until she puts to bed or until a competent court rules otherwise, and to continue taking full responsibility for the pregnancy and all related medical needs until delivery.

Delivering judgment, the presiding judge said the ruling was intended not only to punish the offender but also to serve as a warning that anyone who impregnates and abandons a girl would be held accountable under the law.
