Building Under Construction Collapses in Sokoto

Panic erupted after a building under construction suddenly collapsed in Sokoto, triggering an emergency response from multiple agencies.

On Wednesday, a two-story structure that was under construction fell at Unguwar Rogo along Bauchi Road in the city of Sokoto. Forty-five of the construction workers were unharmed.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Sokoto Operations Office, made a statement on Facebook stating that at approximately 2:23 p.m., the agency got a distress call and promptly sent out its Search and Rescue Team.

A building under construction has collapsed in Sokoto State, though the National Emergency Management Agency has confirmed that no lives were lost in the incident.

According to NEMA, an assessment at the scene revealed that 15 construction workers were present when the building collapsed, but none was trapped or injured, and no casualty was recorded.

The agency said its Search and Rescue Team joined other emergency responders in a coordinated operation to search for possible trapped victims, evacuate casualties if necessary, and secure the area against further risks.

The multi-agency response involved the Federal Fire Service, Sokoto State Fire Service, Sokoto State Emergency Management Agency, Nigerian Red Cross Society.

Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Nigeria Police Force, Sokoto State Urban Planning and Development Authority, the State Association of Civil Engineers, as well as members of the community.

The spokesperson for the Sokoto State Police Command, DSP Ahmad Rufai, confirmed the incident, stating that no life was lost and no injury was recorded.

The owner of the building project, Alhaji Auwal Abubakar, described the collapse as unfortunate but expressed relief that everyone escaped unharmed, describing it as a painful incident while thanking God that no life was lost.

NEMA added that relevant authorities have commenced investigations to determine the cause of the building collapse.
