EU Breaks Silence Over Rumours It Rejected 2027 Election Monitoring Invitation

The European Union Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS has refuted claims that it rejected an invitation from the Independent National Electoral Commission to monitor the 2027 general elections.

The EU confirmed its acceptance of the invitation and indicated that it would deploy an Electoral Expert Mission comprising between two and four independent experts to observe the electoral process.

EU Ambassador Gautier Mignot clarified the position in a statement released Monday in Abuja, characterising reports of alleged rejection as inaccurate.

He noted that INEC formally extended the invitation on April 17, 2026, and the EU communicated its response on July 28, confirming its intention to dispatch the expert mission whose members would receive formal accreditation from INEC.

The ambassador explained that the expert mission would evaluate Nigeria's electoral framework against international, regional and domestic standards and commitments governing democratic processes.

The mission would produce a final assessment incorporating recommendations designed to strengthen electoral systems and enhance subsequent elections.

Findings would be submitted to the Nigerian government with potential release to the public subject to governmental consent.

Mignot dismissed speculation that the decision to send a smaller expert mission rather than a larger observation contingent stemmed from Nigeria's security environment or tensions following the EU's 2023 election report.

He stressed that neither consideration appeared in the EU's formal response to INEC.

The ambassador characterised the deployment decision as reflecting the EU's standard annual review methodology, which examines each partner nation's circumstances and available resources before determining mission scale and format.

Continued consultations with relevant Nigerian authorities would accompany implementation.

Mignot affirmed that the mission deployment would not compromise EU-funded democratic governance support programmes or ongoing electoral assistance to Nigeria.

The EU Delegation urged journalists and media organisations to verify statements directly with its communication office before publication, emphasising that such practice would curtail dissemination of inaccurate information regarding EU activities and positions in Nigeria.
