A 53 year old Uber driver in the United Kingdom, Hayadulla Turkmani, has been jailed for five years for causing death by dangerous driving.

He was cleared of murder and manslaughter.

The case began on September 26, 2025.

Turkmani picked up plumber Michael Ashton, 28, and his partner Sophie Carroll after a night out in Hornchurch, east London.

Ashton became sick and vomited in the car, and the two men argued.

The row carried on after they got home in Langdon Hills, Essex.

CCTV showed Ashton shouting for the driver to stop.

Prosecutors said Turkmani then drove at him and dragged him under the car.

Ashton broke a leg and suffered a brain injury when his head hit the ground. He died eight days later.

Turkmani told the jury he was panicking and had hit Ashton by mistake while trying to get away.

The judge said he should have stopped before driving on.

He will serve half his sentence in custody and has been banned from driving for seven and a half years.

Ashton's mother said the family is living with a life sentence of grief.
