Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate Peter Obi has censured academics for facilitating electoral fraud during election administration processes.

The Independent National Electoral Commission designates university vice-chancellors and faculty members to function as returning officers overseeing gubernatorial and presidential electoral exercises.

Contested outcomes frequently precipitate litigation centred on allegations of rigging, outcome manipulation and voter intimidation.

Speaking at the 2026 Goodluck Jonathan Foundation Democracy Dialogue in Bauchi, Obi additionally condemned judicial partiality and legislative action decriminalising forgery within electoral frameworks.

He contrasted his experience at the Court of Appeal, where five judges unfamiliar to him rendered decisions favouring his position, with contemporary institutional dysfunction.

He characterised the current landscape as one wherein academics collaborate with electorally unsophisticated actors to perpetrate election fraud, lawmakers have eliminated forgery penalties in electoral contexts, and prominent legal practitioners defend such misconduct.

Obi expressed concern that religious leadership has extended ceremonial blessings toward politically aligned figures engaged in criminal activity, describing these developments as symptomatic of comprehensive institutional breakdown.

He asserted that the judiciary has become operationally aligned with the incumbent administration, referencing judicial language affirming governmental mandates as evidence of institutional politicisation.

The former Anambra State governor positioned these phenomena as reflective of systemic institutional degradation demanding reversal and fundamental restructuring.
