Super Falcons Miss World Cup for the First Time Ever

Nigeria's unbroken record of qualifying for every Women's World Cup since the tournament's inception in 1991 has come to an end.

South Africa's Banyana Banyana defeated Nigeria's Super Falcons 2-1 in a playoff match in Casablanca on Thursday night, effectively eliminating the country from contention for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup.

The Super Falcons had sought to bounce back from their disappointing WAFCON quarter-final loss to Cameroon, but South Africa proved the stronger side.

Goalkeeper Kaylin Swart made critical saves, helping Banyana Banyana secure passage to FIFA's Inter-Confederation Play-Off Tournament.

Ghana's Black Queens also advanced from their playoff fixture, while Côte d'Ivoire's Lady Elephants fell 2-1 to Ghana and missed the World Cup race.

The match remained scoreless through the first half before Thembi Kgatlana opened the scoring in the 56th minute. South Africa extended their lead when captain Refiloe Jane scored in the 77th minute.

Nigeria found a glimmer of hope when Christy Ucheibe converted a penalty in stoppage time, but the team could not find an equaliser as the match concluded.

Jane's red card moments before Ucheibe's goal left South Africa playing with ten players for the closing stages.

The defeat compounds a difficult period for Nigeria, which entered the tournament as defending continental champions with ten WAFCON titles.

Their campaign saw a shock 3-2 loss to Malawi, followed by victories over Zambia and Egypt that carried them to the quarter-finals before Cameroon's 1-0 win halted their title defence.

Coach Justin Madugu had framed the South Africa match as a redemptive opportunity following their WAFCON disappointment, but that chance has now disappeared.

South Africa had similarly recovered from their own quarter-final exit at WAFCON after losing 2-1 to hosts Morocco.
