Edo Government Blasts Davido Over Trump Appeal on Osun Election

The Edo State Government has censured Afrobeats musician David Adeleke, known professionally as Davido, for requesting that United States President Donald Trump monitor the forthcoming Osun State governorship election.

Davido had appealed to Trump and the international community to observe the election, raising concerns about potential vi%lence, intimidation and interference in the voting process.

In response to the musician's request, Edo State's Commissioner for Information and Strategy criticised Davido for inserting himself into the political matter.

Speaking during a media briefing in Benin City, the commissioner suggested that Davido should focus on his music career and pursue Grammy recognition rather than involve himself in politics.

He characterised the singer's intention to write Trump as "arrant nonsense" and defended Governor Monday Okpebholo's decision to campaign for the All Progressives Congress candidate in the Osun election.

The commissioner also dismissed a purported academic credential of Okpebholo circulating online, contending that the document was fabricated.

He maintained that he had viewed the governor's authentic qualification, which he claimed demonstrated that Okpebholo holds a Master's degree.

He further attacked Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, referring to him as a "dancer" and questioning whether holding a dancer as governor presented any issue.

"We are looking for votes from Osun.

We are telling them to vote for serious-minded people," he stated.

He emphasised that party members should rally behind their candidates and expressed confidence that the APC candidate would prevail in Saturday's election.

The commissioner remarked that Davido, who should be recording music in the studio, had instead become a political actor, stressing that "governance is serious business."
