President Bola Tinubu has hailed the Hausa people as vital pillars of Nigeria's unity and progress, marking Hausa Day with a message posted on his social media account on Wednesday.

The celebration took place at the historic Daura Palace, where Tinubu praised the Hausa language for flourishing globally and becoming a major tool for trade and connection across the world.

Hausa Day, also known as World Hausa Day or Ranar Hausa, is observed annually on August 26.

It started as a social media push by Nigerian journalist Abdulbaki Aliyu Jari to promote the Hausa language online and highlight its cultural importance.

What began as a grassroots initiative has since grown into international celebrations spanning Africa, Europe, the Middle East, Asia and the Americas, though it hasn't yet received formal United Nations recognition.

Hausa ranks among Nigeria's top languages and is one of Africa's most widely spoken tongues, placing it among the world's major languages by number of speakers.
