Master of Escapes Arrested After Breaking Out of Prison 4 Times

Spanish police have arrested a fugitive nicknamed the "Master of Escapes" after he broke out of prison four times.

Authorities caught him in Tarragona in northeastern Spain on Wednesday based on a European arrest warrant from Italy.

The man famously escaped from a maximum-security Italian prison in December by sawing through window bars and using knotted bedsheets to lower himself down.

Before that, he had broken out of prisons in Terni and Parma in Italy and from a Belgian prison where he reportedly used a human pyramid of people to climb the walls.

Police described him as dangerous but didn't release his name or details of what crimes landed him in prison.

Officers tracked him to a neighbourhood in Tarragona where he was living.

He resisted arrest and people with him tried to stop the police.

One person injured two officers during the struggle.

He was carrying false identification documents and two €500 notes suspected to be counterfeit.

A judge ordered him held in custody without bail while extradition to Italy proceeds.

Police said his escape methods sounded like something from a movie but reality sometimes surpasses fiction.
