Rechael Okonkwo Brings Free Healthcare to Over 5,000 in Nsukka

Nollywood actress Rechael Okonkwo held her eighth annual carnival in Nsukka, Enugu State, this time bringing medical services to over 5,000 people in the community.

The event, called the Nkoli Mega Carnival, partnered with a foundation based in the United States to provide free healthcare to residents who might otherwise struggle to pay for treatment.

Doctors, nurses and other healthcare workers treated people for various illnesses during the outreach.

Those who visited received free check-ups, medications, wheelchairs, walking aids and reading glasses.

People with conditions needing more specialised care were sent to hospitals for further treatment.

The carnival had not happened for two years because of money troubles, but Okonkwo decided to bring it back after a friend encouraged her.

This time around she expanded what the event offers beyond just entertainment.

Along with the medical work, the carnival distributed food and other help to 500 poor widows in the area.

They received rice, tomato paste, noodles, cloth, children's clothes, school bags and writing materials.

Children also got attention through an educational quiz, with bicycles given to those who took part to show how important school is.

Okonkwo said her push to give back comes from her own difficult childhood.

Her father died when she was 13, leaving her to grow up without money or important connections.

That experience taught her what it means to struggle and made her determined to help others, especially children and families without resources.

She said the carnival is about purpose and that people don't all help in the same way.

She urged others to use whatever they have to make a difference in their own communities.

For her, helping people recognise their own capacity to change lives is just as important as the carnival itself.
