The Edo State Consumer Protection Committee has given sellers of sachet gin until September 20 to stop selling the product or face consequences.

The committee announced the new deadline on Monday after enforcing a ban on sachet drinks ordered by the national food and drug regulator.

Sellers had asked for more time, requesting an extension all the way to December 30, but the committee turned that down.

Instead, the committee gave dealers a two-week grace period from September 7 to September 20 to send back their existing stocks to the manufacturers.

During this time, dealers are not allowed to sell any sachet gin - they can only return it.

The committee said nobody is allowed to harass dealers during this extension period.

Starting September 21, the committee will begin full enforcement operations across all 18 local government areas of the state.

The committee stressed that consumer safety is the main priority and urged all dealers to use the grace period to comply with the ban.
