22 local government council chairmen and councillors, all members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), have been sacked by a Federal high court in Port Harcourt, Rivers. This was brought about by a nullification by the court of the electoral process that ushered them in.
The court was presided over by Justice Lambo Akambi who claimed the conduct of the election was done in compliance with legal procedures but the case was already in court while it was organised.
The nullified election of the local government council chairmen and councillors was organized by professor Augustine Ahiazu-led Rivers State Independent Election Commission (RSIEC) during the administration of former Governor, Rotimi Amaechi.
According to PM News, Justice Akambi noted that the conduct of the election was not only illegal, but an affront on the court because the matter was pending in court. It should be noted that RSIEC and the state government were ordered not to organise any election prior to the conduct.
This has been widely regarded as having a political undertone due to the unhealthy rivarly between Governor Nyesom Wike of PDP and the former Governor Rotimi Amaechi who have been at loggerheads for a long period of time.
