The Iceland capital area police are investigating the case against a Nigerian man, suspected of having infected young women with HIV.
The Nigerian man whose identity is yet unknown, is an asylum seeker who arrived in Iceland last August. He prowled the street of Reykjavik where he lured many young women into having unprotected sex with them. The police say he knew of his HIV status and deliberately refused to submit his medical certificate after submitting his asylum application.
He was supposed to submit his medical certificate with the asylum application, since asylum seekers are supposed to be summoned for medical examination one week after applying for asylum but he failed in the process.
Police are currently investigating the case, particularly as regards whether or not more women may have been in contact with him and also been infected. The police put a blanket over his head to protect his identity.
Details of the man’s suspected crimes have not been released. One likely explanation for his arrest could be engaging in unprotected sex with the women without telling them he has HIV—an act which would be against the law.
