Politicians are said to be defecting from the Peoples' Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress for one major reason. Read Why.

According to a socio political group, Bayelsa for Good Governance, politicians jumping ship from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) are doing so to escape the probe of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Daily Post reports that the group claimed the defection of former managing director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Mr. Ndutimi Alaibe, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, Col. Sam Inokoba, (rtd) and others to the APC was a calculated move to escape the beam of the EFCC.

Mr. Perefini Ebiye, the chairman of the group in a statement alleged that the activities of the trio during their capacities as office holders were suspicious and the EFCC had started investigation into their engagements. They were all members of the PDP but had joined the APC as soon as the probe began.

The group claimed that in line with the anti-corruption war began by President Muhammadu Buhari, the men panicked and chose an escape route by joining the APC where they believe they would feel safe.

It was alleged that Alaibe could not account for the disappearance of N187 billion that was supposed to be used to complete some key NDDC projects. The group claimed some of the money was used to fund the third-term bid of former president, Olusegun Obasanjo.

“In the case of Retired Col. Sam Inokoba, the former Bayelsa State PDP Chairman, he is scheduled to keep a date with the EFCC over the misappropriation of party funds, following a petition written by some party stalwarts and made available to the anti-graft agency.

“Senator Lokpobiri on his part was alleged to have misappropriated the sum of N5 billion regarded as funds earmarked for the development of key projects in his constituency since he is the senator representing Bayelsa West senatorial district between 2007 and 2015.

“For us, these men sensing the danger ahead, decided to defect to the All Progressives Congress, (APC) in order to escape the sledge hammer of the anti-graft agency,” the group said.
