In what will come across as a really shocking development, a man has reportedly tortured his own mother to death.

Hammond has been jailed for manslaughter

Darren Hammond is a man who tortured his own mother to death and even broke her body including some of her ribs.

The thug son then went on to hide her body for weeks.

He has however been jailed for 12 years.

According to Daily Star UK, Darren Hammond abused 81-year-old Beryl for years before she broke several ribs at her home and died.

Hammond, 41, hid her body in the bedroom of her home in Sutton Coldfield, West Mids, before cops made the grim discovery after neighbours complained about a pungent smell.

Officers found the badly decomposed remains of Mrs Hammond on August 12 last year and arrested her son.

A post mortem revealed Mrs Hammond had suffered ten broken ribs which could not be explained.

Jobless Hammond, of Sutton Coldfield, was jailed for 12 years after he was found guilty of manslaughter at Birmingham Crown Court.

The court heard Hammond answered the door to police officers after neighbours requested a check-up on his mum who they had not been seen for some time.

They also reported a pungent smell emanating from her home.

He told officers that his mum was upstairs sleeping, they went to check and found her body.

The court heard how Hammond had been living with his mum for the last five years and had been using her pension.

Neighbours alerted cops to the mum's home after noticing an unusual smell

Mrs Hammond had been repeatedly assaulted by her son who had been arrested on three previous occasions.

She also confided in her neighbours and bank manager about her violent son, saying she feared he would attack her.

Detective Inspector Caroline Corfield, from West Midlands Police, said: "Beryl Hammond died after suffering years of abuse at the hands of her own son, Darren Hammond, who abused her physically and took advantage of her financially.

"He disassociated himself from his mother's death initially claiming to have no knowledge of it until police officers entered her bedroom and discovered her body.

"At trial he claimed to have discovered her death only three days before the arrival of police.

"A series of messages sent from Darren to a girlfriend demonstrated that he was becoming increasingly angry and frustrated with his mother in the months before his arrest.

"On 19 July, he referred to his mother in messages for the last time.

"He could provide no explanation for how or when she died or her ten broken ribs.

"He expected the court to find it acceptable that he could live in a small house for many weeks with the decomposing body of his mother without realising she was dead, checking on her welfare or seeking medical help.

"The truth is Darren concealed the death of his mother in an attempt to escape justice after his abuse of her resulted in the most tragic outcome.

"I'd like to thank the people who came forward to assist in this investigation. I hope Beryl's family and friends can take some comfort from Darren Hammond's conviction."
