A woman has been publically caned in front of a cheering crowd for having a s*xual relationship outside of marriage in Indonesia's ultra conservative Muslim province.

The harsh penalty was carried out in a public square as onlookers took photos in Banda Aceh in Indonesia's Aceh province on Thursday.

The woman – who was not identified – is seen kneeling under a canopy dressed with her hair covered with a white hijab

A masked man then holds a cane that appears to be made out of bamboo against her back.

She was then subject to a caning for having sex outside marriage

Aceh is the only province in Muslim-majority Indonesia that practices Shariah law.

It was a concession made by the central government in 2001 as part of efforts to end a decades-long war for independence.

Earlier this year, the authorities in the province announced unmarried couples will be banned from sitting at the same table in restaurants, cafes or coffee shops under a religious crackdown.

The local head of Islamic affairs, Jufliwan, confirmed the measure additionally forbids staff serving lone female customers after 9 p.m. if they are not accompanied by close male relatives.

"Unmarried males and females who are not close relatives should not eat and drink at the same table, because it is sinful according to Shariah law,” he said.

Aceh is the only province in Indonesia which has Sharia law

The regulation also prohibits restaurants and coffee shops from hiring lesbians, gays, or bisexual or transgender people as waiters or waitresses, he added.

In 2014 the province's lawmakers passed a law that punishes gay sex by public caning and subjects non-Muslims to the region's especially strict interpretation of Shariah law.

People convicted of adultery, gambling and consuming alcohol already face caning.

Women wearing tight clothes and people who skip Friday Muslim prayers are also punished.

Hundreds of people have been publicly caned since the punishment was introduced in Aceh in 2005.
