A pretty young girl has lost her life in a most tragic manner as her stunned and helpless mother watched in agony.

A tragic event has left a four-year-old girl dead in front of her mother. The little girl was knocked down by a van while playing on a scooter in the street. Esmé Weir was taken inside a nearby house, where neighbours and paramedics frantically battled to save her life, but she was sadly pronounced dead in hospital.

According to an eyewitness report, the youngster and her mother were returning home from playgroup when tragedy struck on a narrow road in Neston on the Wirral, Cheshire.

One neighbour said: 'The driver didn't know what was happening until he heard the screams of the mother. He was in shock as well and was taken to hospital. It was a terrible scene.'

Today, Esmé's bereft parents paid tribute to their 'little princess'.

A family statement read: 'Our beautiful daughter Esmé Rose Weir tragically passed away following a road traffic collision on Gladstone Road, Neston.

'We would like to thank everybody who helped at the scene, residents of Gladstone Road, paramedics and all the staff at Arrowe Park Hospital.

'We have been overwhelmed with all the love, support and spirit of the community in Neston and all at St Winefrides church. Our little princess has gone to heaven and will be deeply missed and will remain always with us in our hearts and thoughts.

'God bless and sleep tight Esmé. Love always, Mummy & Daddy.'

Dailymail reports that the driver of the van, a 62-year-old man, was taken to hospital to be treated for shock.

Witnesses said the father of a local family tried to resuscitate Esmé in their front room after she was in collision with the van, which was carrying a a cargo of wood.

Cheshire Police said: 'At 12.03pm on Friday, January 15, police received a report of a collision between a van and a pedestrian in Gladstone Road, Neston.'

'Emergency services attended the scene. The pedestrian - a four-year-old girl - sustained serious injuries and was treated at the scene before being taken to Arrowe Park Hospital where she has since sadly died.

'The road was closed whilst emergency services worked at the scene. Enquiries are continuing.'
