A rather rare moment of cultural recognition took place at the Vatican on December 24 during the Christmas Vigil Mass, with the Igbo language prominently featured in the liturgy.
One of the intentions during the Prayer of the Faithful at the Christmas Vigil Mass celebrated by Pope Leo XIV at St Peter’s Basilica was read in Igbo, acknowledging the contributions of Igbo Catholics within the global Church.
The inclusion of the Igbo language highlighted the diversity of the Catholic faithful worldwide and underscored the Church’s emphasis on universality during the Christmas celebration at the Vatican.
In addition, an Igbo couple participated in the Eucharistic Procession, joining others in presenting the offertory gifts to the Pope during the Mass.
