Nigerian singer and entrepreneur Oluwatosin Oluwole Ajibade, popularly known as Mr Eazi, has claimed that he coined the phrase “Detty December,” which has since become synonymous with festive fun during the Christmas holidays in Nigeria.
Speaking at his Detty Rave concert in Accra, Mr Eazi claimed that he coined the phrase while working as a show promoter in Ghana.
He, however, admitted that ‘Detty December’ is bigger than him or anyone else.
“While working as a show promoter with my friends, I suggested that we call our December event ‘Detty December.’ Hashtag Detty December.
“So in 2016, me and my guys invented Detty December. And Detty December is all about going back to your roots, having fun and enjoying life intentionally. Detty December is bigger than Mr. Eazi. It’s bigger than anybody. Detty December is for all of us,” he said.

Recall that Deola Art Alade, a Nigerian entrepreneur and wife of musician Darey Art Alade, sparked controversy after securing a legal trademark for ‘Detty December’ in 2019.
The revelation caused significant backlash among Nigerians who viewed the slang as a shared cultural phrase rather than a corporate brand.
