Fresh details have surfaced about the final moments of Nigerian gospel singer Bunmi Akinnaanu, widely known as Omije Ojumi, who died at a Lagos hospital.

Earlier, Tori News reported that her de@th was announced on Monday, January 12, 2026, by her colleague, Alayo Melody.

A close friend and colleague, Lanre Alewilese, has shared what the singer went through before she passed on.

In a viral video, he explained that in the weeks before her death, Omije Ojumi could neither open her eyes nor speak, showing how serious her condition had become.

According to him, watching her suffer was deeply painful.

Alewilese said he chose not to make her health issues public while she was alive.

He explained that there was no good news to share at the time and that informing the public would only have caused fear and worry without offering any hope.

He added that her struggle was difficult to witness, and keeping it private was his way of protecting both her dignity and her fans.

Speaking in Yoruba, he said in part: “…In the final weeks leading up to Omije Ojumi’s death, she was unable to open her eyes or speak for weeks. I intentionally kept her condition a secret from the public because there was no positive update. I didn’t want to worry anyone unnecessarily. She was struggling, and it was heartbreaking to see her like that…”

The late gospel singer, who was 46 years old, had spent several months seeking spiritual healing for her illness.

During that period, a video of her praying and asking God for healing circulated widely online and drew concern from many Nigerians who followed her music and ministry.

Bunmi Akinnaanu was well known for her deep and soulful gospel songs, with Omije Ojumi standing out as one of her most popular works.
