The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency in Edo State has announced the arrest of 47 suspected drug dealers during the month of May, with over 541 kilograms of illicit substances recovered in the process.

The state commander made the announcement in Benin City on Tuesday, June 2, 2026.

The suspects, made up of 25 men and 22 women, were apprehended across several locations including Ekpoma, Esan West, and Auchi in Etsako West Local Government Area, following targeted intelligence-based operations at known drug hotspots.

Cannabis dominated the seizures, accounting for nearly all of the total weight recovered. Other substances found included tramadol, diazepam, Rohypnol, Swinol, methamphetamine, and codeine syrup.

Among the notable arrests, one suspect was caught with over 27 kilograms of cannabis alone, while others were found with varying quantities of both cannabis and prescription drugs being sold illegally.

Two suspects arrested in Auchi were found carrying a mix of substances including methamphetamine and several controlled pharmaceuticals.

On the legal front, the command secured three convictions during the period, filed five new cases in court, and currently has 94 cases pending at the Federal High Court in Benin City.

In addition to enforcement, the agency also provided counselling to 31 individuals struggling with drug use, all of whom have since been reunited with their families, while eight others remain in rehabilitation.

Investigations into the newly arrested suspects are ongoing, and they are expected to be charged in court once completed.
