A man has gone viral after recounting how he jokingly told a new friend he was heterosexual after weeks of receiving unexpected acts of kindness, admitting he had started wondering whether there was a hidden motive behind the generosity.

He explained that he met the individual at a football pitch about a month earlier, and the two quickly discovered they lived in the same neighbourhood.

Since then, his new friend had been picking him up every Wednesday evening and Saturday morning for football, covering both their match fees and buying water after each session.

Their bond grew stronger after the pair unexpectedly ran into each other at the same church.

The man said his friend also checked in on him after seeing a social media post about his flooded home, helped him and his brother clean up afterward, and later returned with food and drinks so they could watch Club World Cup matches together.

He said the latest gesture came after a football session, when his friend stopped at a boutique to pick up an order and insisted on paying for a pair of trousers for him.

It was at that point, he said, that he jokingly told his friend he was heterosexual, just in case the kindness was rooted in romantic interest, telling him plainly that he was not interested in men.

According to him, the comment left them both laughing, after which his friend explained that he had only relocated to Lagos in April, had not yet made many friends in the city, and considered him the first Igbo person he had grown close to since moving.

After sharing the story with his brothers, the man said they teased him for making the remark, though he maintained that life in Lagos can sometimes make people question the motives behind unexpected kindness from others.

The story has since sparked conversation online, with many Nigerians saying genuine friendships still exist, while others said they understood why he felt the need to clarify things before the friendship could be misread.
