Music star Augustine Kelechi, popularly known as Tekno, has spoken about the stigma he endured while dealing with severe vocal cord damage caused by acid reflux, an ailment that contributed to a downturn in his career.
It will be recalled that Tekno, who was at the height of his fame between 2018 and 2021, suffered serious vocal cord damage that left him unable to sing, forcing him into a multi-year break that disrupted his career momentum.
Speaking on his ordeal in a recent chat with Cool FM Lagos, Tekno revealed that during his battle with the vocal cord condition, he developed a strong dislike for music and only pushed himself to record occasionally because of his recording contract, even as those around him branded him "lazy" for slowing down his output.
He admitted, however, that he initially concealed his condition, even from people close to him and his team members, which led his team to believe he was simply being lazy about making music or performing while he was actually battling the severe vocal cord damage.
According to him, even those closest to him would say he was just lazy and didn't want to perform, adding that he was in a very dark place at the time.
He said that even after recovering, he developed a hatred for music and avoided listening to it for a long while, only forcing himself to work because of his deal with Universal.
Tekno said reading inspirational books helped him heal emotionally and eventually reconnect with music.
