Operatives of the Anambra State Police Command have rescued an unidentified middle-aged man found unconscious and allegedly under the influence of hard drugs in Awka, the state capital.

According to a statement shared on Facebook on Thursday by the State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the victim was discovered by officers attached to the B Division during a midday patrol on July 15, 2026, along Oby Okoli Avenue near the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Temporary Site in Awka.

Police said the man was found lying unconscious by the roadside, showing no visible injuries or signs suggestive of violence.

Officers immediately took him to the Police Hospital in Awka, where he remains under treatment.

The command added that a search of the victim yielded no identification documents or mobile phone that could help trace his identity or locate his relatives.

Preliminary findings suggest the man may have been under the influence of hard drugs, though investigations remain ongoing to establish his identity and notify his family for further necessary action.

The command said the incident underscores the dangers associated with substance abuse and drug addiction, particularly among young people, and reaffirmed its commitment to the Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices, an initiative aimed at tackling drug abuse, cultism and other criminal activities through advocacy, public awareness and collaboration with relevant stakeholders.
