Folarin Falana, better known by his stage name Falz, is a Nigerian rapper and activist who has pledged to keep using his music to combat corruption, inequality, and bad government.

He maintains that protest songs are still an effective means of spurring social and political change.

In an interview on a television programme, Falz stated that he finds inspiration in the struggles Nigerians face, explaining that he believes it is the duty of musicians to address societal concerns rather than ignore them.

"I believe that music will always have the ability to speak to everyone and bring about change on any scale, both now and in the future.

"Music is a phenomenon that evokes emotion, and it will always have the power to evoke an emotion in you, regardless of who you are or where you stand," he stated.

According to him, protest music motivates citizens to become more engaged in national issues and can encourage meaningful action.

He described protest music as the kind that galvanises people, giving them a push and motivating them to act, adding that he believes such music does translate into change, as it encourages more people to feel the need to do more, which he said is exactly what he is trying to achieve.

Explaining why he repeatedly addresses governance and social issues in his music, Falz said Nigeria's persistent challenges make it impossible for him to remain silent.

He said someone has to do the difficult work, stressing that he feels compelled to keep addressing these issues since, as a people, Nigerians have not moved past them.

He explained that he draws inspiration from his immediate environment and continues returning to these themes because he believes someone needs to speak about them.

He added that while others may shy away from these issues, he intends to keep confronting them head-on, arguing that such problems cannot continue to be swept aside indefinitely.

He warned that avoiding these conversations could eventually lead to a breaking point, insisting that the issues must be discussed now and continuously, vowing to keep speaking on them today, tomorrow and beyond.
