Ugandan Football Captain David Owori Dies After Violent Robbery Attack

A 27-year-old footballer died following injuries sustained during a violent robbery attempt near his residence in Kampala, Uganda on Tuesday night.

David Owori, captain of Sports Club Villa, was ambushed by a group of assailants as he approached his home in the Makindye suburb.

Witnesses reported seeing attackers striking him with paving stones, leaving him unconscious before fleeing with his belongings.

The footballer was initially transported to a nearby clinic before transfer to a private medical facility in the city, where he succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday.

SC Villa's spokesperson described Owori as having been ambushed by criminals, sustaining life-threatening trauma that necessitated emergency medical intervention.

Local police have launched an investigation, with authorities documenting the scene and collecting evidence.

Owori's death has prompted significant responses across Uganda's sporting community and beyond.

The Federation of Uganda Football Association characterised him as a leader both on and off the pitch, describing him as an inspiration to his generation.

Uganda's national football team, known as The Cranes, acknowledged the loss of a figure who represented the aspirations of the nation.

Parliament observed a minute of silence on Wednesday and called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances.

Owori was recognised for his tactical acumen and positional versatility as a right-back and midfielder. In 2024, he was instrumental in guiding SC Villa to their first league championship in two decades, their 17th top-flight title.

His performances earned contract extension through 2027.

He had previously represented The Cranes during 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying and was regarded as a prospect for future national selection.
