Bishop David Oakley Facing Judgment Day After Dark Pilgrimage Secrets Uncovered

The Bishop of Northampton has appeared in court facing allegations of s3xual assault against a teenage girl following a religious pilgrimage to Lourdes.

David Oakley, aged 70, is accused of engaging in s3xual activity with the girl on two separate occasions in the early 2000s when she was 15 years old.

At the time of the alleged offences, Oakley was in his mid-40s and serving as a Catholic priest.

Oakley was charged in June with two counts of s3xual abuse of a minor, following an investigation by police authorities specialising in s3xual offences.

He appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court via videolink from his legal representative's office to face the allegations for the first time.

A prosecutor told the court that Oakley and the girl had commenced a relationship following a pilgrimage to Lourdes, a renowned pilgrimage destination in southwestern France and one of the world's most visited Catholic shrines.

The victim reported s3xual contact with Oakley on at least two occasions.

Oakley was born in Stourbridge in the West Midlands and ordained as a priest in 1980.

He became Bishop of Northampton in 2020 and is currently withdrawn from public ministry following his initial arrest in September 2025.

The chief magistrate declined to request pleas during the hearing and transferred the case to the higher criminal court, noting the profile of the case and the defendant's former ecclesiastical position warranted such action.

Oakley received conditional bail prohibiting contact with the alleged victim or her family members.

He is scheduled to return to court for a plea hearing on September 10.

Following disclosure of the charges, the Catholic Diocese of Northampton acknowledged Oakley had been charged after an investigation into historical safeguarding allegations, stating the matter would distress those involved while declining further comment on the ongoing legal process.
