University of Ibadan Tops Nigeria in Latest Global University Ranking

The University of Ibadan has taken the top spot among Nigerian universities in the latest Webometrics ranking, beating several leading institutions in the country.

The University of Ibadan has topped the rankings of Nigerian universities in the July 2026 Webometrics Ranking of World Universities, while the University of Lagos came second nationally.

According to the ranking data, over 32,000 universities and higher education institutions worldwide were assessed.

The University of Ibadan ranked 1,291st globally and first in Nigeria.

The University of Lagos ranked 1,355th worldwide and second nationally.

The University of Nigeria came third in the country and 1,397th globally.

Although these institutions are Nigeria's leading universities, the country's highest-ranked institution still remains outside the global top 1,000.

Covenant University, Ota, ranked fourth in Nigeria and 1,522nd globally, followed by Landmark University at fifth nationally and 1,659th worldwide.

The University of Ilorin ranked sixth in Nigeria and 1,883rd globally, while Obafemi Awolowo University placed seventh nationally and 1,986th globally.

Ahmadu Bello University occupied eighth position in Nigeria and 2,068th globally.

The University of Port Harcourt ranked 2,077th globally and the Federal University of Technology, Akure, ranked 2,203rd.

Other Nigerian universities that performed well included Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Bayero University Kano, University of Calabar, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Federal University of Technology Minna, University of Benin, Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta, University of Uyo and Lagos State University.

The National Open University of Nigeria, University of Abuja, Federal University Oye-Ekiti, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, University of Jos, University of Maiduguri, Osun State University, Pan-Atlantic University Lagos, Redeemer's University and Delta State University also ranked among Nigeria's leading institutions.

The Webometrics Ranking assesses universities based on their digital presence, how accessible their scholarly resources are and their research impact.

The ranking is published twice yearly.

Globally, Harvard University maintained the top position, followed by Stanford University. MIT ranked third, with Oxford University and the University of Washington in fourth and fifth places.

Cornell University, the University of Michigan, University of California Berkeley, Johns Hopkins University and Columbia University completed the global top 10.

American universities dominated the global rankings, occupying seven of the top 10 positions.

The United Kingdom had Oxford among the leaders.

The University of Toronto was the highest-ranked Canadian institution at 12th globally.
