Delta Flood Displaces Families as Homes Go Under Water

Heavy rain has flooded parts of a community in Delta State, forcing families from their homes and destroying property.

Government officials visited the affected area on Monday to assess the damage and plan relief measures.

A state commissioner who led the inspection team sympathised with residents and said the government would provide immediate help while working on long-term solutions to the flooding problem.

He stressed that the state governor's administration is committed to the safety and wellbeing of residents.

However, the commissioner also told residents they must take responsibility for their environment.

He warned that throwing rubbish into drainage channels and building on waterways make flooding worse.

He directed local authorities to launch awareness campaigns telling people to keep their surroundings clean and clear blocked drains so water can flow freely during heavy rainfall.

The commissioner explained that managing floods requires both government action and community cooperation, starting with simple preventive measures.

He urged residents to regularly clean drainage channels and their surroundings to reduce flooding damage when rain is heavy.

The area has experienced repeated flooding in the past, and the government had already included flood and erosion control projects in its budget.

Officials had also stepped up flood preparedness last month by identifying vulnerable communities and preparing emergency shelters as the rainy season intensified.

A community leader said the situation had become serious, with multiple houses underwater and residents displaced.

He appealed to the state government to urgently improve drainage infrastructure and assist families who lost homes and belongings.

The government said the assessment would help guide its response and determine what measures are needed to prevent flooding and reduce its impact in future.
