Hamilton Targets Historic First Ferrari Win at Monza

Lewis Hamilton has revealed he has been reflecting on what it would mean to become the first black Formula 1 driver to win for Ferrari at the Italian Grand Prix, as he chases his maiden victory in red at Monza this weekend.

The seven-time world champion, in his second season with Ferrari, said the historic significance of potentially breaking new ground at the team's home race has been weighing on his thoughts.

Hamilton has won at Monza five times throughout his career, but never while driving for Ferrari.

He witnessed Charles Leclerc claim victory there in 2019 while he stood on the podium, and the prospect of achieving that feat himself would be extraordinary.

The possibility of becoming the only black driver to ever win for Ferrari at Italy is something that has crossed Hamilton's mind repeatedly.

His first Ferrari victory came in Barcelona in June, lifting his hopes of challenging for the championship in his second year with the team.

He currently trails Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli by fifty-nine points with eleven races remaining, though Antonelli faces a grid penalty for exceeding his permitted engine-part allocation, improving Hamilton's prospects at Monza.

Hamilton acknowledged the magnitude of the moment.

He was unaware until recently that he had already matched Michael Schumacher's record of five Monza wins.

The thought of going into new territory with a sixth victory drives him forward.

The pressure is substantial, particularly at Ferrari's home event where thousands of passionate supporters known as the Tifosi will attend.

Hamilton wants to deliver for the team, the factory workers and the fans whose passion for Ferrari remains unmatched.

His mother will be at Monza this weekend, adding a personal dimension to the race.

Ferrari has deployed its second permitted engine upgrade of the season, addressing the power deficit that has plagued the team all year.

Hamilton acknowledged the upgrade helps but stressed it will not close the entire gap to Mercedes.

The team has been losing four tenths per lap in recent races, an enormous deficit. However, he praised the focus and enthusiasm he sees when visiting the factory.

There is now a clear direction within the team compared to last year, with everyone working purposefully toward defined goals.

The upgrade represents progress, Hamilton confirmed, though he recognises Ferrari still has work ahead.

Seeing improvements arriving each weekend excites him and he remains convinced the team has what it takes to win.
