The head of Nigeria's food and drug agency has come under fire after a video showed her laughing when a journalist asked about calls for her resignation.
Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye was speaking at a press briefing organized to address the problem of fake yoghurt, contaminated palm oil and counterfeit drinks spreading in Nigerian markets.
When the journalist brought up demands from the public for her to step down because the agency has failed to stop these fake products, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye laughed it off.
The reaction has drawn heavy criticism on social media with many Nigerians expressing anger at what they see as an insensitive response to a serious public health crisis.
Social media users said the laughter shows how top government officials view ordinary Nigerians with contempt and disrespect.
They said it reflects how little regard such people have for citizens who are beneath them in the hierarchy.
Some users argued that the president should have removed her from office long ago if he was serious about tackling the problem.
Others commented that there is something wrong with the older generation in government and top agencies.
They said these officials do not care about the wellbeing of everyday Nigerians and laugh in their faces knowing nothing will happen to them.
Users also pointed out that the job of NAFDAC is serious and her representation is not good for the agency's current standing.
They said there is nothing to laugh about given the scale of the crisis with fake products threatening public health.
