At least 24 schoolchildren have died in a stampede as they tried to escape a fire that swept through two schools in Bukavu, a city in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

Several adults also lost their lives in the blaze.

The fire destroyed around 300 houses in the densely packed neighbourhood.

The cause remains unknown.

Authorities say the death toll could rise as more bodies are found.

Survivors have been taken to hospitals, where they're being treated for injuries and trauma.

Videos from the scene show children lying on hospital floors in severe pain.

The fire broke out in Bukavu, the capital of South Kivu province and one of the most crowded cities in the region.

The area has been under the control of rebel forces since February of last year.

A witness told journalists that the fire was put out by afternoon, but smoke was still rising from the debris.

Pictures circulating online show young children lying motionless on the ground.

The government in the capital issued a statement expressing deep sorrow over the tragedy and offering condolences to families.

Officials have ordered assessments of the affected schools to ensure learning can continue.

This tragedy comes just days after a similar disaster in the capital, where people died in a stampede at a wedding banquet hall.

In response, the government has ordered strict safety measures and deployed teams across the country to enforce standards at public gathering places.
