Gunmen Attack Plateau Mining Site, Kill 3 Women and Injure Another

Three women were killed and another person injured when gunmen attacked a mining site in Rakum community, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, on Monday.

The attackers reportedly stormed the site at about 4:30 p.m., opened fire on people working there and fled.

The attack comes amid heightened security fears in parts of Plateau, especially Barkin Ladi, Mangu and Bokkos, where the state government recently imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew after a series of attacks.

Spokesperson of the Berom Youth Moulders Association, Rwang Tengwong, confirmed the attack to journalists in Jos.

He called it another sad development that has raised worries about the safety of people living and working in the area.

He urged security agencies to track down the attackers and make sure they are arrested and prosecuted.

A community member, John Silas, also confirmed the incident.

He said it happened in the evening while miners were at work and appealed to security agencies to step up efforts to stop more attacks.

The attack adds to a string of violent incidents in Plateau in recent weeks, despite steps by the state government and security agencies to contain the violence.

The state government on Thursday asked residents to stay calm and obey the law, saying it is working with security agencies to protect lives and property.

There was no immediate statement from the police or military on Monday's attack.

Authorities are expected to explain the circumstances and say whether any arrests have been made.
