Formula 1 superstar, Lewis Hamilton struck gold in the British Grand Prix for the third time at Silverstone on Sunday, thanks to his brilliant late decision to change tyres. The Formula One world champion instructed Mercedes mechanics to remove his dry tyres nine laps from the chequered flag Instead of waiting for team orders.
His judgement proved spot on as the heaviest downpour of the afternoon began moments later, allowing him to secure victory and lift the trophy in front of 140,000 delighted fans. Mercedes team-mate and closest rival, Nico Rosberg had to settle for second as Hamilton extended his world championship lead to 17 points.
'I think it's the first time in my career I made the perfect choice in terms of coming in. I could see the rain coming and was losing temperature in my front tyres so I had to go for it. To see a sea of British flags at the end made it such a huge day.
On the last couple of laps I was getting watery eyes because I could see the crowd cheering. When I felt the emotion come in, I was trying to shake it off and tell myself to stay focused.' said Hamilton, who lost out to Rosberg at Monaco in May after an unnecessary pit stop.
Victory capped a tremendous fightback by Hamilton, who has joined Jim Clark and Nigel Mansell as the only British drivers to have won their home Grand Prix three times. Hamilton has won five of his last nine races.
