As the debate on whether or not Lionel Messi is the best footballer to have ever graced the earth, soars, the pope has made an opinion on the issue.

The Catholic Pontiff, Pope Francis, has talked about who he thinks the best footballer ever is.
 
According to him, it is none other than Lionel Messi.
 
The Pope named Lionel Messi as the best footballer of all-time – ahead of Diego Maradona and Pele.
 
According to The Sun, during his visit of Poland, His Holiness was asked who was better out of Maradona and Pele. But the 79-year-old gave a clear message of who he thinks is the best ever.
 
During a lunch break for a World Youth Day gathering in Krakow, Pope Francis was asked: “Who is better, Maradona or Pele?”
 
He answered: “For me, Messi.”
 
No further explanation needed, the Pope prefers the Barcelona superstar.
 
Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Pope Francis is a huge football fan and a lifelong fan of San Lorenzo.
 
The club has won 15 Primera Division titles in their 108-year career, but only four since the mid-1970s.
 
The last came in 2013.
