The supporters stormed Congress
In what will come across as a really shocking development, many Pro-Trump rioters on Wednesday, January 6, stormed the US Senate building causing lawmakers to go into hiding.
The Trump supporters, after a Trump rally in Washington DC, stormed the US Capitol, overran police and breached the Senate building where members of Congress were meeting to certify President-elect Joe Biden's win in the November 2020 presidential election.
Before the riots began, Republicans in both chambers had planned to object to the count and delay the inevitable certification of Biden's win.
The US Capitol is on lockdown as police couldn't contain the supporters who have taken over the Senate floor and are even making poses and taking pictures as they move round the building donning Trump flags and insignia.
The purpoted attack on Capitol Hill comes after Trump told his supporters he will never concede to Biden while also blasting Vice-president Mike Pence for not having the 'courage to overturn Biden's win'
Before the invasion, Congress was in session to count and certify the Electoral College votes for president and vice president.
The US Capitol Police have ordered staff to evacuate House Cannon building and the James Madison Memorial Building which is part of the Library of Congress.
The police also sent an alert to staff alert to staff about a suspicious package in the 300 Block of First Street SE, advising staff to avoid the area.
