It was pure panic that took over the Izombe community in the Oguta Local Government Area of Imo State on Thursday night.

Panic took over the area after security officers suspected to be of the Ebubeagu security outfit invaded the community and burnt many houses.

The PUNCH reports that the suspects came to the village in multiple vehicles and started attacking people, burning houses and shops.

The development made members of the community to flee their homes, while the arsonists had a field day.

The reason for the arson was not ascertained but it may not be unconnected with the fracas between the security agency and some members of the community about a month ago which led the Ebubeagu officers to attack the community and raze shops and vehicles.

Several sources from the community who spoke to our correspondent said they had fled their homes.

Describing the damages as humongous, one of the indigenes called on the government to come to their rescue.

A cleric and one of the leaders of the community, Chinedu Nnadi, decried the activities of the Ebubeagu officers in their community.

He, therefore, called on prominent sons of the community such as an army general, Kalu, and the All Progressives Congress candidate for Ohaji-Egbema/Oguta/Oru West Federal Constituency to intervene.

The community leader said, “My heart bleeds. My town Izombe once a peaceful community is on fire caused by Ebubeagu. They are killing and burning houses.

“Where are our army general Kalu, Ifeobu, Eugine Dibiagwu? It is time to look at the governor’s face and tell him the truth.”

The spokesperson for the police in the state, Micheal Abattam had yet to respond to an inquiry concerning the incident as of the time of filing this report.
