Kemi Badenoch, leader of the UK Conservative Party, has backed the recent US operation that removed Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro from power.

She described the action as morally justified, even though the legal and diplomatic details remain unclear.

Badenoch who spoke on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme said her experiences growing up in Nigeria under military rule shaped her view of authoritarian governments, making her see Maduro’s removal as a positive development.

She acknowledged, however, that the operation raises questions about international norms and the rules that guide interventions in other countries.

She said that decisions in democratic territories, like Greenland, should remain under the authority of their local governments.

She said, “Where the legal certainty is not yet clear, morally, I do think it was the right thing to do.

“I grew up under a military dictatorship, so I know what it’s like to have someone like Maduro in charge.

“Maduro oversaw a “brutal regime. I am “glad he’s gone.”
