Lagos Plans Special Number Plates for Persons With Disabilities

The Lagos State Government is taking steps to introduce specialised vehicle number plates aimed at improving identification, accessibility, and mobility for persons with disabilities.

In an effort to improve inclusion, accessibility, and ease of travel throughout the state, the Lagos State Government has started preparing to implement specialized car number plates for people with disabilities.

During a courtesy visit by the management of the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs to the Lagos State Motor Vehicle Administration Agency, the proposal was the main topic of discussion as both organizations looked into working together to develop and implement the disability-friendly vehicle identification system.

In a post shared via social media on Wednesday, the Permanent Secretary of the Motor Vehicle Administration Agency, Abdulrasheed Muri-Okunola, speaking during the meeting, described the initiative as a major step towards realising Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu's vision of building "A Greater Lagos That Leaves No One Behind."

He stated that the specialised number plates would improve recognition, accessibility and ease of movement for persons with disabilities throughout the state, adding that the initiative aligns with the principles of inclusive governance.

He disclosed that the agency had already commenced discussions with the Federal Road Safety Corps on the proposed number plates and would begin the necessary administrative processes while working closely with LASODA to ensure successful implementation.

Earlier, the General Manager of LASODA, Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, said the visit was aimed at initiating strategic discussions on introducing specialised number plates tailored to the needs of persons with disabilities in Lagos State.

Noting that the initiative should cover all categories of persons with disabilities, as well as parents of children with disabilities and their caregivers, and that the system would improve identification, accessibility and support for members of the disability community.

She added that the proposed number plates would reinforce government's commitment to building a more inclusive society where persons with disabilities are recognised.

Respected and able to participate fully in all aspects of life, describing the initiative as underscoring the government's commitment to inclusion and equal opportunities for persons with disabilities.

She called on all stakeholders to embrace inclusion as a shared responsibility and support policies that advance the rights and welfare of persons with disabilities.

Both agencies reaffirmed their commitment to advancing the initiative, which aligns with the provisions of the Lagos State Special People's Law that established LASODA to protect the rights of persons with disabilities, eliminate discrimination and promote equal opportunities across all sectors.

The meeting was attended by directors and senior management staff of LASODA and the Motor Vehicle Administration Agency.
