A man has been sentenced to 13 years in custody, ordered to pay N250,000 in compensation to his victim, and administered 20 lashes in public following his conviction for r@ping his neighbour's 10-year-old daughter.
Aliyu Bala was found guilty at a magistrate court in Minna.
Following the judgment, authorities transported Bala to the Hakimi Palace in Bosso, where the sentence was carried out publicly before community members.
The Director-General of the State Child Rights Agency characterised the ruling as a significant departure from precedent, emphasising government commitment to addressing s£xual offences targeting children with severity.
She noted the public enforcement was designed to deter potential offenders and encouraged communities to cease protecting those who commit such crimes, urging them instead to report perpetrators to authorities.
A representative from the State Ministry of Justice described the outcome as consequential and likely to establish a template for handling comparable cases.
She appealed to residents to report suspected child abuse rather than permitting offenders to evade accountability.
The victim's mother had initially considered abandoning the case due to family and community pressure but ultimately chose to proceed after recognising the significance of securing justice for the child and ensuring the accused faced consequences.
The traditional ruler of Bosso remarked that this marked his first encounter with such a judgment in Minna, characterising it as a powerful warning against future offences.
He praised the decision, observing that the public nature of the enforcement would reinforce community understanding of the gravity of child s£xual abuse.
