Uber has made a major move that is set to shake Nigeria’s ride-hailing industry, bringing its service to an end after years of connecting riders with drivers across the country.

Uber is shutting down its ride-hailing service in Nigeria effective September 2, 2026.

The company notified drivers on Wednesday that they would stop receiving ride requests through the app from that date.

In a message to its drivers, Uber said it had made the difficult decision to end operations after reviewing its business.

The company thanked drivers for their years of work on the platform, saying their commitment kept the city moving safely and affordably.

Uber described itself as proud of what it achieved in Nigeria, serving as a bridge connecting riders with independent drivers.

The company did not explain the specific reasons behind the shutdown in its notice.

Drivers with questions can contact Uber's Help Centre until September 24.

The company closed its message by thanking drivers for being part of the Uber community in Nigeria.

The pullout marks a major shift in Nigeria's ride-hailing industry, where app-based transportation has become central to urban mobility in recent years.
