Militants and Oil Pipeline Vandals Take Over Arepo Creeks

Posted by George on Fri 21st Aug, 2015 - tori.ng

A numbers of vandals have reportedly taken over Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC pipeline at Arepo in Ogun state.

The creeks of Arepo in Ogun state has been taken over by militants who are believed to be drawn from different parts of the country.

Vanguard reports that area has become a haven for criminal activities by vandals who seem to have thrown caution to the wind as they vandalise pipelines and siphon petroleum products, without fear of apprehension by security agents.

More worrisome to the people of Arepo community is the ruthlessness and audacity that the oil thieves most of whom migrated from the Niger Delta to settle at the river banks.

The traditional rulers around Arepo and its environs have been accused of aiding and abetting activities of vandals in Arepo and Ikorodu . But the Olu of Arepo, Oba Atanda Oyebisi, dissociated himself from the accusation, condemning the last explosion in its entirety , lamenting that vandals have succeeded in tarnishing the image of the community.

It should be recalled that a few weeks ago, the media was saturated with news of a pipeline explosion at Arepo, Ogun state, where scores of vandals were reportedly burnt to death. The cause of the explosion was later traced a power tussle among some conflicting militant groups stationed at Arepo. Some members of the militant groups also attacked two photo journalists that were temporarily abducted, beaten and then released.
