Sad! Baby Dies After Doctors Failed to Realize Overweight Mom Was Pregnant

 

 

Diane Thomas, 41, who was 8-months pregnant when she went to hospital to complain of stomach cramps lost her baby girl because medical staff did not realize she was in labour. According to an inquest, Diane gave birth in a hospital toilet after staff failed to realize she was pregnant.

 

She told an inquest: "It was a bad shock, like it was all a dream". Diane had been in the cubicle for 15minutes when she gave birth without the medical staff realizing. The baby had survived for some minutes even after it was stuck in the toilet. The inquest was told doctors believed Diane, who was overweight, was experiencing a miscarriage when she reported suffering bad stomach cramps for two days.

 

In a police interview, Diane, from Penzance, Cornwall, said the following morning she reported "really bad pain" but a nurse had told her: "If you were in that much pain you would be rolling around on that bed".

 

The baby could have survived if Diane had been on a labour ward according to expert paediatrician Prof Peter Fleming.

 

It was also clear that if the hospital had conducted a scan on Diane, it would have helped the baby survive. It was however concluded that Diane's baby girl died of natural causes.
